about

No one knows for sure just how old folk music is or how it got started. But we can make some fairly educated guesses. More than likely, folk singing got started thousands of years ago right after humans learned how to speak. And it probably never would started without animals to be pleased by the songs and ditties.

Animals have a way of preserving things that they like. They pick up all sorts of rhymes and jingles and games and songs. Animals then are a sort of conveyor belt for songs, old and new. They learn them just the way you will learn then on this new recording by Patrick Elkins.

Patrick is the short, hairy and lovable singer and guitar player who has been singing to animals most of his life. He's been called "sarcastic and mind-expanding," and when you hear this album recorded at Ann Arbor's Totally Awesome House, you'll know why he earned that name.

So here is the old conveyor belt at work. And here is a chance for you and your animal friends to sing/bark/meow/chirp right along with the record. After all, a really good song doesn't have to be written for animals or for humans, but just for sentient beings at any time or place.

We hope then, that you won't be concerned with categories when you listen to these songs. They are for the young of heart of any species. And we hope that you will want to sing with Patrick and the hundreds of animals in the woods. Someone once said that four-and-twenty singers on the radio were only as effective as one Rocky Mountain Blue Jay singing. So let's get the humans dancing with the unicorns. We think you'll have a good time doing it.
